Abstract

The research is based on the social phenomenon where many parents especially mothers are either working abroad or facing divorce, resulting in the caregiving role being taken over by grandmothers. This study aims to examine how grandmothers’ parenting styles contribute to the development of independence among 4–5-year-old children at PAUD Darurrahmah. This study aims to examine how grandmothers’ parenting styles contribute to the development of independence among 4–5-year-old children at PAUD Darurrahmah. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The subjects of this study were several grandmothers who serve as primary caregivers and their respective grandchildren enrolled in early childhood education. The results indicate that grandmothers’ caregiving plays a significant role in fostering various aspects of independence in young children, including self-care, decision-making, responsibility, selfconfidence, and emotional regulation. The dominant parenting style observed was democratic, characterized by affection, exemplary behavior, and open communication. Grandmothers often provided praise, emotional support, and gentle guidance. The study concludes that grandmothers’ parenting has a meaningful impact on the independence development of early childhood learners, despite some limitations in physical ability due to age. This research is expected to contribute theoretically to the field of early childhood education and practically to PAUD educators, parents, and future researchers interested in the dynamics of grandparenting as an alternative caregiving model.
